Kaiju Alpha Upgrade Guide

Jim Liu — Updated 2026-06-06 — community-tracked costs, patch-dependent (see caveats)

Enter your current U-cells, coins, and level — the upgrade path planner shows which step to hit next, how long the grind takes at your farm rate, and ranks every upgrade route by ROI (tier-weight gained per 1,000 U-cells).

Methodology

How the upgrade ROI score is calculated

Every upgrade step in Kaiju Alpha moves a kaiju from one tier to another (or stays within the same tier). I assign each tier a numeric weight — starter forms weight 0, B-tier forms weight 1, A-tier forms weight 2, and S-tier forms weight 3. The ROI score is simply the tier-weight gained by the step, divided by the U-cell cost and multiplied by 1,000, so you can compare steps that cost very different amounts.

Example: Godzilla 1955 → Classic costs 3,500 U-cells and jumps from B-tier (weight 1) to A-tier (weight 2) — a gain of 1 tier-weight. ROI = (1 / 3500) × 1000 = 0.286. Destoroyah Aggregate → Form 4 costs 18,000 U-cells for an A→S jump (weight gain 1) — ROI = (1 / 18000) × 1000 = 0.056. The Godzilla path is dramatically more efficient per U-cell, even though Destoroyah Form 4 is the stronger endpoint.

Within-tier upgrades score 0. Steps like Kiryu Type 2 → Type 3 (A → A) gain no tier-weight by this metric. They still have real in-game value — move upgrades, cooldown reductions, new ability slots — but in pure upgrade-spend terms, a within-tier step does not move the tier needle, so it ranks below any genuine tier jump regardless of cost. Factor in the moveset guide if the new ability is your main goal rather than tier ranking.

Caveat: ROI does not capture PvP impact directly — some A-tier unlocks outperform others in the meta. Cross-reference with the tier list before committing a large U-cell investment to a specific path.

Upgrade traps that waste your U-cells

I made at least two of these personally. They cost me the better part of a week of farming.

Doing within-tier upgrades before tier jumps

Kiryu Type 2 → Type 3 and Suko Base → Enhanced are real upgrades with genuine ability improvements — but they both stay in A-tier. If you are choosing between spending 13,000 U on Kiryu Type 3 versus 14,000 U on Godzilla Minus One Awakened (A → S), the latter changes your tier bracket and opens S-tier ranked play. Unless Kiryu's Absolute Zero cannon is specifically what your build needs, tier jumps take priority over within-tier refinements. The planner flags these as low-ROI so you can see the trade-off clearly.

Ignoring additional requirements until the currency is ready

I farmed 7,500 U-cells toward Destoroyah Aggregate without tracking the "Win 10 matches as Juvenile" requirement. When the currency was ready the match count was at 3. That was a full week of avoidable delay. Start the additional requirement in parallel with farming — by the time your bank hits the target, the match count is done. The planner shows every additional requirement inline so you can plan around it from day one.

Assuming coin costs are trivial

The S-tier upgrade for Monster Zero requires 46,000 coins alongside 19,000 U-cells. Coins farm faster than U-cells in most methods, but that is a large stack. Players who hit the U-cell target but lack coins either delay or scramble to coin-grind at the finish line. The planner shows cumulative coin cost alongside U-cells — budget both from the start rather than treating coins as an afterthought.

Important caveat

Patch-dependent costs — always verify in-game before a big spend

Update 24 rebalanced several upgrade requirements — some additional requirement counts changed and at least one U-cell cost was adjusted. Every step in the planner is marked either "Official" (confirmed via a developer post or patch note) or "Community estimate" (aggregated from Discord and Fandom wiki reports). Community estimates carry a ±15% accuracy range. Before spending a large amount of U-cells toward a specific form, open the in-game upgrade menu and verify the cost shown there matches what the planner lists. If your in-game number differs by more than 15%, the game has patched since our last community data pull — treat the in-game figure as the ground truth.

This page is refreshed after major updates. If you spot a cost discrepancy, the Kaiju Alpha wiki is the fastest place to check whether the planner data is already updated.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best first upgrade in Kaiju Alpha?

For free-starter players the Godzilla 1954 → 1955 upgrade (800 U-cells) is the cheapest entry. The better ROI play is pushing to Godzilla Classic for 3,500 total U-cells — that is a genuine B → A tier jump with the atomic breath ability. If you already have an A-tier kaiju like Godzilla Minus One, the Awakened upgrade (14,000 U-cells) is the best S-tier cost in the game.

How much does upgrading cost in Kaiju Alpha?

Steps range from 800 U-cells (Godzilla 1954 first upgrade) to 19,000 U-cells (Monster Zero → King Form). Coins are a secondary cost: B-tier steps run 2,000–8,000 coins, S-tier steps up to 46,000 coins. All figures are community-tracked — treat them as ±15% estimates.

Which upgrade gives the best value per U-cell?

By ROI: Anguirus Base → Advanced (lowest U-cell cost for any tier jump), then Godzilla Minus One → Awakened (best S-tier ROI at 14k U), then Destoroyah Juvenile → Aggregate (strong A-tier for 7.5k U). The lowest ROI steps are within-tier upgrades like Kiryu Type 2 → Type 3.

Should I upgrade my current kaiju or save for a new one?

Upgrading your current kaiju is usually the higher-ROI move if you are at B-tier — the A-tier unlock costs 7,500–9,000 U-cells and gives a genuine PvP jump. Buying a new A-tier base form costs 4,500–7,000 U-cells, but then you still pay upgrade costs. Exception: if your current kaiju's next step is a within-tier improvement, starting a different kaiju's tier-jump route may be more efficient.

Do upgrade costs change with patches?

Yes. Update 24 rebalanced several upgrade requirements. All costs on this page are flagged as Official (developer-confirmed) or Community estimate (aggregated reports). Verify the in-game menu number against the planner before a large spend — if they differ by more than 15%, the game patched since our last data pull.

How long to farm enough U-cells for an S-tier upgrade?

S-tier upgrades cost 14,000–19,000 U-cells. At Boss Rush (~760/hr) that is 18–25 hours. With the 2× gamepass (~1,520/hr), 9–13 hours. Enter your farm method in the planner above — the farming ETA column gives a personalised estimate for each upgrade step at your current rate.
